Embedded Tutorial: Battery-Driven System Design: A New Frontier in Low Power Design

چکیده
As an increasing number of electronic systems are powered by batteries, battery life becomes a primary design consideration. Maximizing battery life requires system designers to develop an understanding of the capabilities and limitations of the batteries that power such systems, and to incorporate battery considerations into the system design process. Recent research has shown that, the amount of energy that can be supplied by a given battery varies significantly, depending on how the energy is drawn. Consequently, researchers are attempting to develop new batterydriven approaches to system design, which deliver battery life improvements over and beyond what can be achieved through conventional low-power design techniques. This paper presents an introduction to this emerging area, surveys promising technologies that have been developed for battery modeling and battery-efficient system design, and outlines emerging industry standards for smart

Conventional CMOS memory i.e., Static Random Access Memory (SRAM) has been the popular choice for embedded memory application for last several decades. However, SRAM seems to be approaching a brick wall. On one hand process variability and leakage power is posing severe obstruction towards SRAM scaling to future nodes and on the other hand, emerging energy-constrained and bandwidth hungry elect...

The advancement in the integrated circuit design has developed the demand for low voltage portable analog devices in the market. This demand has increased the requirement of the low-power RF transceiver. A low-power phase lock loop (PLL) is always desirable to fulfill the need for a low power RF transceiver. This paper deals with the designing of the low power transconductance- capacitance (Gm-...

In this paper, the development and optimization of Power Distribution Control Strategy (PDCS) have been performed for a Hybrid Energy Storage Systems (HESS) of a Series Hybrid Electric Bus (SHEB). A common PDCS is based on the use of Ultra-Capacitor (UC) pack. A new simple PDCS is developed as a battery based one. For the battery based PDCS, four parameters ar...

Given energy as the limiting factor in a low-power battery-driven embedded microcontroller (MCU), energy-efficient operation is critical. Low-energy microcontrollers benefit from comparable performance and longer lifetimes when compared to microcontroller cores without energy saving schemes. Dynamic voltage and frequency scaling (DVFS) has been proposed in [1] as a novel technique to provide op...
